Japan Import Restrictions

With effect from May 15, 2008 and in compliance with our terms and conditions, DHL Express Global has decided to stop offering exceptional handling of shipments to Japan that require animal or plant quarantine.

Please understand that any such shipments arriving at DHL gateways in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya will be returned to the shipper.

Below is a representative, but not complete list of commodities that are subject to animal or plant quarantine:

  • Fresh, cut, or dried flowers
  • Potpourri
  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Frozen fruits
  • Green coffee,
  • Soybeans, all kinds of beans
  • Malt
  • Straws
  • Seeds
  • Fresh meat, frozen meat, beef jerky, ham, sausage
  • Bones and horns
  • Antibodies
  • Serum
  • Any blood of animals
  • Fur and feather that have not been processed
  • Bacteria / viruses.

Accordingly, it is extremely important that descriptions on invoices are clearly understood to avoid any misunderstandings during clearance processing.
"PERSONAL EFFECTS" or "GIFT", for example, do not make the contents of the shipment clear.
Such ambiguous descriptions will lead to shipment being returned to origin.

We would highly appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
If you have any questions, please contact your sales representatives.
