How do I know if my shipment is dutiable?
Each country establishes its own standards as to which goods are considered documents and which are dutiable. You can either:
1. Refer to the International Service Center Details defined by Country located in the Help;
2. While preparing a shipment online use the Help me decide link next to the Customs Value selections; or
3. Contact Us for assistance with your International shipment.
So my shipment is dutiable. How does that affect my shipment?
It can affect your shipment in two ways:
1. Customs. All dutiable shipments must go through a customs clearance procedure, which can affect the transit time and delay your shipment; however, DHL has developed working relationships with customs officials worldwide to streamline the clearance process. We're a licensed customs broker in more than 140 countries, which means a great majority of DHL shipments are cleared through customs within minutes or in just a few hours. Some items, particularly unusual or high-value items, can take longer to clear customs. Transit times depend on how long local procedures take.
2. Documentation. All dutiable shipments require at least a Commercial Invoice and a Waybill. You may need additional forms, depending on shipment content, value, and destination. For documentation requirements, please refer to the DHL Trade Automation Service: Trade Document Library located in the International Trade Center or refer to the specific country in the International Service Center.
What is most likely to be detained by customs?
We have identified the commodities of special interest to local customs for the countries we serve. Please refer to the International Service Center Help and look up the specific country to which you are shipping.
Are international transit times always met?
Many factors can affect international transit times:
1. Holidays. Every country celebrates different holidays. If your shipment arrives on a holiday, DHL couriers may not be able to deliver it until your recipient's office is open.
2. Weekends. Transit times listed on this site are calculated in business days, so you will need to account for weekend days, if applicable. Note that weekends may differ by country. For example, many Muslim countries are open for business on Saturdays and Sundays, but are closed on Fridays. Please Contact Us for a delivery commitment that reflects the details of your specific shipment and destination.
Who pays duty charges on my goods?
The recipient typically pays duty charges; however, as the shipper, you can pay them, which means you are requesting DDP or Deliver Duty Paid service.
What about NAFTA requirements?
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Canada, and Mexico allows for reduced duty on qualifying goods. DHL offers information to help you understand how NAFTA affects your shipments and procedures you must follow.
